A missão Juno da NASA capturou esse olhar no hemisfério sul de Júpiter
em 17 de fevereiro de 2020, durante a aproximação mais recente da espaçonave ao
planeta gigante. Júpiter não é apenas o
maior planeta que orbita o Sol, mas contém mais que o dobro da quantidade de
material de todos os outros objetos do sistema solar combinados - incluindo todos
os planetas, luas, asteróides e cometas.
Na composição, Júpiter se assemelha a uma estrela, e os cientistas
estimam que, se tivesse sido pelo menos 80 vezes mais massiva em sua formação,
poderia ter se tornado um tipo de estrela chamada anã vermelha em vez de
planeta. Enquanto os elementos mais comuns do universo, hidrogênio e hélio,
compõem a maior parte da massa de Júpiter, as nuvens impressionantes que são
visíveis no topo de sua atmosfera são compostas principalmente de amônia e
sulfeto de hidrogênio.
Essa visualização de alta resolução é composta de quatro imagens
capturadas pelo imageador JunoCam e montadas pelo cientista cidadão Kevin M.
Gill. As imagens foram tiradas em 17 de fevereiro de 2020, entre as 10:31 e as
11:00 PST (13:31 e 14:00 EST). Durante esse período, a sonda estava entre
49.700 e 100.400 quilômetros (30.700 e 62.400 milhas) do topo das nuvens do
planeta, a latitudes entre 50 e 68 graus sul.
